چکیده

In the description of the interaction of atomic ensembles with light, the atoms are often treated in the electric dipole approximation, and are therefore effectively considered to be point dipoles. The advantages of the point-dipole formalism are twofold. First, the d-function potential associated with point scatterers allows for significant mathematical simplifications compared to finite-size scatterers f1g. Second, the point-scatterer formalism allows for a transparent description of many multiple-scattering phenomena, mimicking most of the associated relevant physics f2g. The light scattering properties of point dipoles can be expressed by means of their T matrix T J which is related to the dynamic polarizability aJ by

Towards Measurement of Polarization Properties of Skin using the Ellipsometry Technique

Introduction: The human skin is an active medium from the optical point of view. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques employing light are increasing. Current optical techniques are based on the measurement of the intensity of reflected absorbed or backscattered light from or within skin. Studies have shown that biological tissues, and in particular skin, demonstrate polarization...

Decomposition of objects for light scattering simulations with the null-field method with discrete sources

The null-field method with discrete sources (NFM-DS) is used for the simulation of the light scattering by elongated particles. These particles can be decomposed into several identical parts with a small aspect ratio. The T-matrix computed for a single part is used to compose the T-matrix for the whole particle. For verification purposes the light scattering distributions computed with NFM-DS a...

Discrete dipole approximation for calculating extinction and Raman intensities for small particles with arbitrary shapes

We present a discrete dipole approximation ~DDA! method to determine extinction and Raman intensities for small metal particles of arbitrary shape. The Raman intensity calculation involves evaluation of surface electromagnetic fields, and thus is relevant to surface enhanced Raman scattering ~SERS! intensities. We demonstrate convergence of the method by considering light absorption and scatter...

Efficient implementation of the invariant imbedding T-matrix method and the separation of variables method applied to large nonspherical inhomogeneous particles

Three terms, ‘‘Waterman’s T-matrix method’’, ‘‘extended boundary condition method (EBCM)’’, and ‘‘null field method’’, have been interchangeable in the literature to indicate a method based on surface integral equations to calculate the T-matrix. Unlike the previous method, the invariant imbedding method (IIM) calculates the T-matrix by the use of a volume integral equation. In addition, the st...
